To start off our second tech dem of our first year, we started by cutting out all of the pattern pieces, except the waistband, for our shorts.

After all of our pieces were cut out we started off putting darts in the back pieces of the shorts and two pleats in the front two pieces of the shorts. These were then to be put aside so we could start Workington the pocket. We created a ‘pocket bag’ by attaching a large square shape to a small triangular shape called a pocket filler. This was then all overlocked and sewn together. I then added the pocket bag to the from of the shorts followed by sewing half of the front of the shorts up.

Once the shorts were half sewn up it was time to add in my zip. We started by sewing a lining in the shorts just on the area that the zip would go in, to go behind the zip. We then placed the zip in-between this lining and sewed it in on both sides, creating a working zip! We used a metal zip for these shorts, as opposed to the plastic zip the we used in the dress tech dem, this is because commonly in jeans, trousers and short you find a metal zip.

Now that the zip was in we could sew up the back of the shorts and attach the side seams together so that the shorts were now one item. We then had to hem the bottom of the shorts to give the leg holes a crisp look. To do this we first over locked the right side of the shorts and then sewed them up inside a small amount.
Then it was time for me to add the waistband to the top of the shorts, I found this fairly straightforward compared to the zip. We started by cutting the waistband out of two strips of calico, one with interfacing ironed to one side, this was the back, and then we sewed around the top and the sides to attach them together, cutting off the corners afterwards to create a sharp corner when turned back the right way. This then got sewn to the top of the waistband and then finished off by sewing the right side in the ‘ditch’ to hold the waistband down inside.
